How to Become a Freelance Web designer

Have you ever wanted to become a freelance web designer but you aren’t quite sure where to start? There are many ways to learn such as online tutorials, books, and even through schooling. If you are determined to learn on your own, we recommend going through online tutorials. There are actual websites out there that are free to use and help you learn basic programming/design skills.

To become a freelance web designer, you must first learn programming and design skills. Visit the library and choose a few books on programming. You can read them just before bed and get a “feel” for what programming is all about.

Once you’ve rented out some books, it’s time to look up online tutorials. Start out basic, learning how to design a static HTML site. Create your first page, according to the tutorial and from there you can start asking questions. HTML really isn’t that difficult to learn, especially if you are someone who is great at identifying patterns or memorizing codes.

Go to websites like LissaExplains, W3Schools, and HTMLGoodies. All these sites have one thing in common and that is the desire to teach you how to design a simple website through step by step instructions. Lissa Explains is our favorite site because it’s where some of us learned. The remarkable thing about that site is that a twelve year old girl had created the site and spent time teaching others through her tutorials.

If you want to become a freelance website designer, you will have to have plenty of contacts. This means, get your website finished early and have a newsletter form. Also, it’s a good idea to put threads up at the forums, showing people your portfolio. These are the quickest way to get clients but if you really would like to, you can use third party sites like GetAFreelancer or through ODesk.
